Born in Werneck (Bavaria), soprano Barbara Emilia Schedel began her career with intensive studies of the piano and cello. She then went on to combine her piano studies with music pedagogy, before discovering her voice while working as a vocal coach and accompanist in Denmark. This resulted in singing studies with Prof Charlotte Lehmann at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg, a course Ms Schedel completed in 2006.
Masterclasses with Richard Miller, Klesie Kelly, Margreet Honig, Rudolf Jansen and Helmut Deutsch have followed since then.

The soprano has received numerous scholarships (Deutscher Bühnenverein, Händelakademie), awards and prizes at domestic and international competitions, including the singing competition "Verfemte Musik" (MDR), "Armin Knab" Würzburg (First Prize), Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin (opera), Mozartfest Würzburg (Special Prize for contemporary music) and the Music Prize of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, worth 10.000 Euro.
On the basis of these successes, Barbara Emilia Schedel was invited, in 2004, to become a member of the Young Opera ensemble at the State Opera in Stuttgart, where she sang lyrical coloratura roles as a guest in various productions until the 2007/08 season (most recently in Offenbach’s "Gaîté parisienne").
An active lied and concert singer, Ms Schedel has performed at several festivals, principally focusing on works of the 17th and 18th centuries. She has performed with conductors H. Rilling, P. Schreier, W. Christie, S. Köhler and H. Froschauer, among others, and with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Staatsorchester Mainz, Münchner Bachsolisten, Staatskapelle Dresden and the WDR Radio Orchestra Cologne. Her concert schedule has taken her through Europe and to South America and is well documented in radio and TV recordings, including a concert from the Salzburg Festival with works by Mozart and Strauss.
One focus of her repertoire is contemporary music. Ms Schedel has premiered a number of works, such as "Ganna" by K. Hübner, "Aus der Welt" by U. Strübing, "Erwin" by M. Svoboda and several others. She has been offered guest contracts and invitations to sing at the Theatre in Fürth (in cooperation with Bavarian Radio), the State Theatre in Darmstadt, the Württemberg State Opera in Stuttgart and the National Opera in Crakow.
The label Brilliant Classics has published Beethoven songs with Barbara Emilia Schedel, as part of a complete edition.
For the 2009/10 season, the is preparing the roles of Pamina, Fiordiligi and Galathea in Händel’s "Acis and Galathea“.
